Hemangiosarcoma is a type of cancer that is rarely found in humans, however, it is quite common in dogs. The Cancer itself develops in the lining of the blood vessels and this makes it very prone to metastasizing.

All forms of Hemangiosarcoma are considered to be very aggressive and all types are potentially fatal for canines. Because of its ability to metastasize to quickly, Hemangiosarcoma will result in the death of canines before it is even detected.

This makes battling this disease very hard as it is very hard to spot it before cancer reaches a critical stage. Experts suggest that the only way to successfully treat Hemangiosarcoma is by understanding and addressing the factors that cause it.

Types of Hemangiosarcoma

Namely, there are three types of Hemangiosarcoma found in dogs and some are more serious than others.

  • Dermal Hemangiosarcoma is considered to be the least serious of the three because it usually manifests in the skin in areas where there are little fur and areas which are often exposed to sunlight. The positive note is that Dermal Hemangiosarcoma can be successfully treated through surgery.
  • Subcutaneous Hemangiosarcoma can be considered more serious than the former with almost 60% chance of metastasis. This type of cancer develops right below the skin, and like the former, surgical removal is possible. However, the chances of removing all the cancerous tissues are difficult.
  • Visceral Hemangiosarcoma is the most deadly and serious form of cancer that develops in the hearth and spleen. This type of tumor is ruthless and cruel, with the average prognosis giving canines 6 to 9 months of life left even with some of the best treatments available. This is because Visceral Hemangiosarcoma has an extremely high chance of metastasis, which often results in the death of canines.

There isn’t a clear answer as to what causes Hemangiosarcoma and the main suspected reasons are the exposure to chemicals and pesticides, which challenge their immune system and the dog’s diet.

What Is the Diagnosis?

Diagnosis of Hemangiosarcoma is performed with surgical biopsy, which could take up to a few days as results need to be sent to specialists in order to perform a more accurate analysis of the tests.

Because of the nature of this disease, the abdominal cavity, and a blood test is the first step in the diagnosis. X-ray and ultrasounds can be performed on the suspected organs which are infected, and radiography or echocardiography is performed if the suspected organs are the heart and lungs.
