Updates on Jeremy Hammond, Barrett Brown, POW Bowe Bergdahl
April 10, 2014. Manchester, KY. Last week, we brought readers updates on whistleblower Bradley-Chelsea Manning and America’s lone official POW Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. This week, we have additional news about fellow political prisoners Jeremy Hammond and Barrett Brown, along with an urgent call for help from our good friends at team Bowe in Hailey, Idaho.
It’s no coincidence that all four young men discussed in this article are also prominently featured in the Whiteout Press Special Report, ‘American Martyrs and Political Prisoners’ and the video by the same name produced by our sister publication Opposition News. If we had our way, all four of these patriotic sons of America would be free and home with their families. Until that day, we’ll stand by them, and hope you will too.
Jeremy Hammond
As readers can see by the photo he sent, Jeremy Hammond looks incredibly good. Either the government feeds our federal prisoners extremely well or the most accomplished hacker in the world has been taking advantage of the prison’s weight room. Even with the somewhat long hair, Hammond cleans up nicely minus the rebellious dreadlocks.
Recently, our good friends at FreeJeremy.net received a handwritten letter from Jeremy. Also enclosed was the accompanying picture. They write, ‘As anyone who knows him can plainly tell, Jeremy has put on some weight, all of it muscle…He also says that the weather has been warming, and that the prisoners have begun to organize impromptu softball games in the yard. He seems particularly excited by this :)’
Also, Jeremy asked to pass the word to all the supporters that have sent him books to help pass the time. Not only is he slowly working his way through them, he’s also passing them on to other prisoners when he’s finished. As anyone who’s familiar with Hammond’s current setting knows, good reading materials, especially rebellious political items, are as good as gold in prison. ‘He shares them with other inmates and says that there are often lines at his cell to borrow books,’ his supporters tell us, ‘So thank you to all who have contributed in that regard. Please know that you are not only helping Jeremy, but other prisoners as well.’

Barrett Brown
It’s fitting that we report updates on both Jeremy Hammond and Barrett Brown at the same time. They’re both sitting in prison because of the same crime – the theft of classified materials from US defense and spy contractor Stratfor. But while Hammond received a 10 year sentence for committing the cyber theft, Brown was facing five-times that sentence for simply writing a news article about it. Fortunately, after media outlets around the globe rallied to his defense, the charges related to the article were dropped.
As reported by our good friends at Free Barrett Brown, the journalist has reportedly pled guilty to charges related to two separate cases. One is apparently a new charge and accuses Brown of purposely using his powers of the press to secretly steer authorities away from Jeremy Hammond during their investigation of the Stratfor hacking. The other guilty plea is reportedly over the YouTube video in which Brown tells the FBI agent that terrorized his mother that he would get the agent back, “legally” he specifically noted.
Since the plea agreement is sealed, nobody knows for sure what the details are. Other sources have reported that Barrett’s total jail sentence would probably be in the area of five years. Brown’s attorney released the following statement (from Free Barrett Brown):
“The Barrett Brown who I know and call my friend has never been one to compromise with the government. But in this instance, I think he recognizes that taking this case before a jury in conservative Texas is a needless roll of the dice. In fact, I think this whole thing would have been settled long ago, if not for the fact that the government had filed excessive and meritless charges which they later dropped. I’m pleased that the parties were able to reach this agreement. Although in principle he shouldn’t have to plea to anything, this spares everyone the spectacle of a costly trial, and the bottom line is that Barrett will be coming home – as he’s already served 19 months unnecessarily.”
Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl – POW
America’s only official Prisoner of War, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, just celebrated his 28th birthday two weeks ago. Unfortunately, he did it while spending his 5th consecutive year being held by Taliban-allied militias in Pakistan. Bergdahl was captured in 2009 and his captors have released periodic videos showing that the battered and bruised American soldier is still alive. The latest video was released only a few months ago.
As word of Bergdahl’s plight spreads across America to those like us here at Whiteout Press that refuse to leave another US soldier behind to the enemy, invitations from individuals, organizations and even media outlets from across the country have been rolling in to Bowe’s parents. That’s incredible and helps spread the word even more. The only problem is, the Bergdahl family isn’t rich. They’re regular people like you and me. They simply don’t have the money to travel to and from any of these extremely important events taking place to help their son.
That’s why our very good friends at Team Bowe have asked us to put out the call for assistance. Bowe’s mom and dad desperately need a little funding help ASAP so they can attend some of the events around the country being held for their son, especially the ones that will include media interviews in major American cities. As a fellow parent, this author can only image the heartache this mom and dad must feel every minute of every day for the past five years, agonizing over what their only child is going through while in the hands of the enemy.
Even though we at Whiteout Press are in the middle of our 3rd Birthday Fundraiser, some things are just more important. Please, if readers can somehow find the way, send a few dollars to the Bergdahl family so Bowe’s mom and dad can attend some of the many Spring events being held to help raise awareness of their son’s status as America’s only official Prisoner of War. He’s in critical danger of being left behind as the US pulls out of Afghanistan, and we can’t let that happen. We won’t let it happen, not again.
