Planned armed March on Washington gains Momentum

May 16, 2013. Arlington. Thousands of Americans determined to show their support for the Constitution, civil rights and the 2nd Amendment are planning to march on the nation’s capitol with loaded weapons on July 4th. The call to action has divided gun owners with many admitting that the chance of violence is too great. But that may just be the objective.

Leery gun owners fear a replay of the 1775 massacre on Lexington Green if armed demonstrators march on Washington.

History repeating itself

If the thousands of patriotic Americans who have already RSVP’d and intend to participate in the armed 4th of July march on Washington are hoping to provoke a violent assault by government troops, it’s obvious where they’re getting the idea from. Even a novice historian can recall the bloody massacre on Lexington green on April 19, 1775.

For many, America wasn’t born the following year when the Declaration of Independence was signed. And it wasn’t born a decade later when the US Constitution was ratified. To them, and to the many patriotic Americans who plan to march with weapons in hand, America was born on that bloody day. And if government agents were to fire the first shots in what would surely be another bloody massacre in which regular Americans are slaughtered by their own government, another American revolution would surely follow.

So don’t be surprised if government officials take drastic measures to keep the above scenario from happening in two months. While Virginia has legal concealed carry laws, Washington DC does not. And announcing their intent to invade the nation’s capitol with a heavily armed mob, knowingly violating multiple laws, is most likely a crime in itself.

More than likely, authorities will make repeated threatening warnings to gun owners thinking of participating in the days leading up to the armed march. They may even cordon off the area and search individuals, turning away or arresting anyone with a weapon. And finally, any armed marcher who actually makes it across the bridge into DC will be immediately disarmed and arrested. That’s the most likely scenario. But if officials are unprepared, playing politics or just plain looking for a fight with gun owners, this march could get ugly.

Open Carry March on Washington

That’s the name of the event, as well as the Facebook Page where the idea has rapidly gained momentum. According to the posted details, the armed march will be held on July 4, 2013. It will begin at Arlington National Cemetery at 9:00am and continue until 5:00pm. Sometime after the morning assembly, armed marchers will begin their trek across the Memorial Bridge and into Washington DC.

The event’s description explains the organizers’ motivation for the demonstration, ‘This is an act of civil disobedience, not a permitted event. We will march with rifles loaded & slung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated & cower in submission to tyranny.’

The group anticipates resistance from federal officials writing, ‘This will be a non-violent event, unless the government chooses to make it violent. Should we meet physical resistance, we will peacefully turn back, having shown that free people are not welcome in Washington, & return with the resolve that the politicians, bureaucrats, & enforcers of the federal government will not be welcome in the land of the free.’

At the forefront of the armed march is organizer Adam Kokesh. In his written vision for the event, he is insisting that all armed marchers assemble in military formation and submit to a weapons inspection carried out by Kokesh or someone appointed by him. As he explains in the event description, ‘As organizer, AVTM reserves the right to reject anyone from the formation at any time for any reason.’ AVTM stands for ‘Adam Vs. The Man’, the name of Kokesh’s website. At the time of this writing, the site was either down or offline.

Gun Owners react

Almost immediately after news of the proposed armed march surfaced, gun owners across the country began to chime in. Many support the demonstration, while others are vehemently warning against it. So far, the event’s Facebook page has invited 82,476 individuals. 4,162 have confirmed they plan to attend and 3,689 more indicate they might.

Illustrating a divided gun owning community, an article from LibertyFederation.com detailing the event for its patriot subscriber base drew heated comments from both sides. A quick scan of the 25 posted reader comments shows 6 supporting the armed march and 19 opposed. However, it should be noted that out of those 19, 5 would support an armed march if the guns were not loaded, a couple suggested a march in Virginia only, and most were simply against any act that knowingly violates gun laws.

One reader summed up the feelings of most of those who left comments saying, ‘This is not a good idea. It will not win much friends for the NRA who is dedicated to preserving our 2nd amendment. This action will only serve to attract any screwball who is out to make a name for himself or herself at the cost of sincere people who care about our constitutional rights. There are better ways to get the message across than to show up with loaded rifles in Washington.’

But there were those who fully support the idea of an armed march on Washington. One wrote, ‘The D.C. laws are unconstitutional! Grow some balls! Stand up for the rights of ALL citizens and preserve their rights under the US Constitution!’

One reader even went a step further, making a suggestion that probably drew some smiles from the Constitutionalists and gun owners commenting, ‘I do not believe that this march will do any good – unless they plan on fighting and arresting all those in the government while they are there. But as Kokesh plans on surrendering arms as soon as the Pigs say so, this is a failure waiting to happen.’

Adam Kokesh, the demonstration organizer, anticipates that Washington police will simply stop his army from crossing the bridge into the capitol and will instead turn them away. That, he says, would show the world in dramatic fashion that the US federal government stands opposed to the American people. But this author doubts it will ever get that far.

More than likely, authorities will either arrest Kokesh prior to the march for promoting criminal activity, turning it into a peaceful, unarmed, ‘free Adam Kokesh’ demonstration. Or they will unleash a fear campaign warning gun owners not to participate and lock down half of Virginia beginning on July 3, insuring nobody with a weapon even has a chance to assemble at Arlington Cemetery.

And that’s probably a good thing for both sides. The idea of thousands of armed individuals, divided in confrontation, colliding in armed struggle in our nation’s capitol is not something the American people are ready for. They’d be horrified. Republicans would condemn the march while Democrats would destroy those who participated. History shows a revolution needs the support of at least one-third of the population. And based on the make-up of our representatives in Congress, zero percent of Americans want a revolution, at least right now.
