Will Trayvon Martin Verdict cause Riots?
July 1, 2013. Sanford. Spectators watching the ongoing George Zimmerman trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin are slowly watching the prosecution’s case fall apart. Outside the courtroom, critics are warning that the media is trying to instigate racial tensions and even rioting if the verdict is Not Guilty. Others warn the black community is promising a repeat of the Rodney King riots.

1992 all over again
As witnesses take the stand in the murder trial of George Zimmerman, the murky story regarding what happened the night 17 year-old Trayvon Martin was murdered is slowly clearing up. And many of Martin’s supporters are now warning things are looking a lot like the 1992 Rodney King trial and subsequent riots.
In both incidents, a black male was the victim of over-aggressive non-black authority figures. In each, the corporate media used questionable tactics to fuel anger, hatred and resentment within the black community. And in both situations, prosecutors bungled the case. And if the final two similarities come to fruition – a ‘not guilty’ verdict and subsequent riots in black neighborhoods in cities across America – the outcome may be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The evidence comes out
The first week of testimony in the George Zimmerman murder trial was eye-opening. It’s also looking as though the prosecution may have a problem proving its case in the death of Trayvon Martin. Both the defense and prosecuting attorneys presented their best witnesses, and if that’s the best they have, get ready for George Zimmerman to be acquitted.
The murder, and the trial for that matter, really only has one main witness – the man who watched the entire altercation from his porch only a few feet away. And his testimony last week sided with George Zimmerman, making him out to be the victim. And unlike the prosecution’s star witness – the teenage girl Trayvon Martin was on the phone with as he walked – the defense’s star witness John Good presented clear, consistent, intelligent details that seemed to solidify his credibility.
Watching TV with his wife on the night of February 26, 2012, John Good testified that he heard a “faint noise” outside getting closer to his house. He opened his door, went out onto his back porch and watched as two men were on the ground fighting only a few feet away.
“The person you now know to be Trayvon Martin was on top, correct?” defense attorney Mark O’Mara asked Good, “He was the one raining blows down on George Zimmerman, correct?” “That’s what it looked like” Good replied. The witness also described Zimmerman lying on the ground crying out for help as Martin straddled him and repeatedly rained punches down upon him from above.
Good said he attempted to verbally break up the fight yelling out to the two men, “What’s going on?” After no reply from the two struggling individuals, Good said he then yelled out, “Cut it out!” It was somewhere around that point where the star witness says he specifically heard George Zimmerman cry out, “Help!” Good responded by yelling back, “I’m calling 911.” But as John Good turned and entered his house to do just that, Martin continued to rain punches down onto Zimmerman.
In the few seconds it took John Good to walk the couple steps to his phone and begin dialing, he heard the gunshot that took Trayvon Martin’s life. Seconds later, the 911 operator answered his call. “I just heard a shot right behind my house. They’re wrestling right in back of my porch,” the 911 recording details Good telling the operator, “I’m pretty sure the guy’s dead out here. Holy sh*t.”
Other testimony from other witnesses was just as damaging to the prosecution’s case. Almost as important as the eye witness is the disclosure of the way Trayvon Martin’s lifeless body was found when police first arrived moments after the shooting. The first officer on the scene described how Martin was on his knees, slumped forward with his head and chest on the ground. TV pundits are suggesting that the position confirms Martin was in fact on top of George Zimmerman when he was shot.
The other setback for prosecuting attorneys was the testimony of the teen girl that Trayvon was on the phone with as George Zimmerman was mysteriously following him. Martin was described as more angry than frightened, and looking for a physical altercation more than running from one. She also quoted the 17 year-old Martin using racial slurs like “n*gger” and “cr*cker” to describe the stalking Zimmerman.
The prosecution makes mistakes
When neighbor John Good presented his recollection of the events of that fateful night, he almost single-handedly derailed the prosecution’s case against George Zimmerman. And it didn’t help their cause when the only discounting of Good’s testimony they could achieve was getting him to admit he never could see any of Trayvon Martin’s punches actually strike Zimmerman’s face in the darkness. But jurors were treated to rarely scene pictures of a bloody and broken-nosed George Zimmerman immediately after the shooting. It was also confirmed that Martin’s knuckles were bloodied, suggesting he had in fact been punching Zimmerman.
The biggest complaint against prosecutors however, goes all the way back to April 11, 2012. That was the day George Zimmerman was taken into custody and charged with Second Degree Murder with a potential sentence of life in prison. “We have to have a reasonable certainty of conviction before filing charges” the prosecutor said at the time. But critics argue that George Zimmerman never entered the altercation with the intent to kill Trayvon Martin, as the prosecution must now prove to get a conviction.
In reality, George Zimmerman appears to be the instigator of the altercation by following Martin around against the direct order of the 911 operator he had been on the phone with when he first noticed Trayvon walking by. But as witness testimony now suggests, Martin was the physical attacker, not even letting up after Zimmerman’s face was beaten to a bloody pulp and he repeatedly cried out for help. That revelation alone may be enough to gain the sympathy of the jury and reinforce the notion that George Zimmerman only shot Trayvon Martin because he was in fear for his life.
Preparing for riots
As the warnings become louder and more numerous, it’s no longer a secret that many in America’s black communities are threatening deadly riots if George Zimmerman is acquitted. And many more throughout the country’s white and Hispanic communities are raising the same warning.
In the days after the shooting, the streets of Sanford, Florida where the incident happened almost saw riots due to the injection of race into the tragedy. Mayor Jeff Triplett was even forced to hold a public press conference begging protesters and counter-protesters for, “continued calm in the city of Sanford, surrounding areas and across the nation.”
An article from Townhall.com yesterday blames the American media for injecting racism into the tragedy and attempting to insight violence. ‘According to FBI statistics, approximately 9,000 African Americans are killed in this country annually,’ the author explains, ‘this carnage is basically ignored by the news media.’ The report goes on to cite another little-known statistic, ‘To add some perspective to the numbers, about 6,588 Americans have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, but 108,000 African Americans have been killed on the streets of America.’
‘Clearly, the media focused on the Trayvon Martin case because of the race factor,’ the outlet continues, ‘Trayvon Martin was black and George Zimmerman is Hispanic, although, initially, the media erroneously referred to the neighborhood watch volunteer as “white.” After civil rights leaders and politicians joined the fray, it was no surprise that Zimmerman was charged with second degree murder.’
In the first of many ominous reports, the authors add their voices to the growing call for calm and restraint throughout America’s black communities, ‘Ideally, there should be a calm reaction across the country to whatever verdict is reached. Instead, there are concerns that civil unrest will lead to rioting if Zimmerman is acquitted…If there are riots, much of the blame should rest with the news media which created such racial unease with their coverage of this case.’
Another outlet warning of possible race riots if George Zimmerman is acquitted is Alex Jones’ Infowars. The opening sentence of their Friday report begins, ‘Following a number of tweets making threats to kill white people if George Zimmerman is acquitted of murdering Trayvon Martin, a former Chicago police officer warns that the outcome of the case could spark race riots in cities across America.’
The account quotes Crime File News’ Paul Huebl, a former Chicago Police officer. Huebl not only predicts that the Second Degree Murder charge against Zimmerman will be rejected by the jury, but that America will see riots worse than those after the Rodney King trial in 1992, “I fully expect organized race rioting to begin in every major city to dwarf the Rodney King and the Martin Luther King riots of past decades.”
The report cites other well-known American personalities who are also warning of racial violence if George Zimmerman is acquitted. On the right, there’re commentators like Pat Buchanan. While the left has its own vocal voices in the form of individuals like Spike Lee and Jesse Jackson.
So, while one side threatens deadly riots and the other side warns of them, whether or not they happen may very well rest in the hands of America’s corporate media. If they black-out those calling for peace while giving a non-stop platform to those calling for violence, like the industry did in 1992, deadly race riots across America may already be a foregone conclusion.
