March 11, 2012. The Sun. Two more massive solar flares exploded from the surface of the sun yesterday. Scientists anticipate the wave of plasma and charged particles to hit the Earth tomorrow. Every 11 years, solar flares and sun spots reach peak activity. Its part of the Sun’s reoccurring cycle. Some believe it’s no coincidence that this cycle reaches its highest and most dangerous level of activity in 2012 – the year of the doomsday prophecy.

The sun is a living, breathing, ever-changing thing. A giant ball of flammable gas, the sun constantly spits out huge balls and even lakes of fire. These flames reach hundreds of miles into space and the their energy actually comes so close to the Earth that it disrupts communications and destroys satellites orbiting the planet. While actual flames don’t reach the Earth, it’s the explosion of x-rays, plasma rays and other electro-magnetic energy waves that could potentially wreak havoc on mankind.
Fans of The History Channel may remember a documentary the network produced depicting the last time solar activity was so extreme, it caused minor chaos throughout the America’s wild west. While less developed countries and societies hardly noticed a thing, the United States had already begun crossing the nation with telegraph wires and other current-driven gadgets. The 1859 solar storm hit the Earth so hard, it literally fried telegraph wires and shut down communications.
Experts agree, if a solar storm the equivalent of the one in 1859 were to hit the Earth, millions of people stand to lose their lives. Satellites orbiting the Earth would be the first casualties. As this author has pointed out in the past, a large majority of US military and national defense functions are completely dependent on America’s system of satellites. The nation would be left extremely vulnerable if its military was literally flying blind.
Communications are also heavily dependent on satellites these days. With satellites knocked out of commission and the telephone wires from land lines completely fried, most communication abilities would be completely lost.
Many experts also insist a massive solar storm like the one in 1859 would also destroy all power stations and electricity supplies, in effect wiping out the entire power grid. Many others suggest that any item with a microchip, a circuit board or power supply, will be complete disabled. Imagine a world with no communications, power or defense. Within hours, gas stations and grocery stores would run out of food and fuel. And without electricity, the continuous flow of supply and demand would come to a screeching halt.

Anyone whose looked to the NASA website to see what the government experts have to say about the situation knows that the space agency has positioned itself as one of the country’s foremost experts on solar storms, and then proceeded to insist there is absolutely nothing to worry about. For more than a year, NASA has been downplaying any and all theories about negative effects from the many 2012 doomsday theories, including solar storms. One of the main coincidences is the fact that the Sun’s activity will peak this year.
According to NASA’s website in 2011:
“Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history…Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.”
According to NASA’s website today:
“On March 8, 2012 at 10:53 PM EST the sun erupted with an M6.3 class flare, and about an hour later released a coronal mass ejection (CME). These eruptions came from active region 1429 that has so far produced to X class flares, and numerous M-class flares. NASA’s Space Weather Center models measure the CME traveling at speeds of over 700 miles per second. The CME should reach Earth’s magnetosphere, the protective envelope of magnetic fields around the planet, early in the morning of March 11…On March 10, 2012, the sun released another two M-class flares. One, rated as an M5.4, peaked at 12.27 AM EST. The second, rated as an M8.4, peaked at 12:44 PM EST. These two flares came from the same Active Region (AR) on the sun, designated number 1429, that has already produced three X-class and numerous M-class flares over the past week.”
While the M6.3 flare hit the Earth this morning with little notice, the wave that will strike the planet tomorrow is from a larger M8.4 burst. Also of note is the fact that 3 X-class solar flares have been reported. That’s the highest designation a solar flare can receive. Also, according to the NASA reports, all the extreme solar activity occurring this week has erupted from the same spot on the sun.
Earth’s defenses
In an article published by the UK’s Guardian, the paper interviewed a handful of British scientists immediately after the first series of solar flares erupted on March 8. Dr Jonathan Eastwood, a research fellow in space and atmospheric physics at Imperial College London, explained, “At the moment, the Earth’s magnetic field is trying to deflect the solar material around the Earth, and scientists in the UK and around the world are monitoring the situation to see if our magnetic shield will hold up.”
He went on to say, “According to the NOAA space weather prediction centre, this could cause intermittent satellite navigation [GPS] and high frequency radio problems, especially in more polar regions, as well as bright auroral displays in northern regions.”
Dr Craig Underwood of the Surrey space centre at Surrey University looked out over the coming months. He told the Guardian, “We may expect more storms of this kind and perhaps much more severe ones in the next year or so as we approach solar maximum. Such events act as a wake-up call as to how our modern western lifestyles are utterly dependent on space technology and national power grid infrastructure.”
